So, you can’t get enough of puzzle games on the DS and you adore Pokemon. Well, you’re in luck. Pokemon Trozei is the game for you.
Aesthetics:
The visuals in this game aren’t particularly stunning, but that isn’t the most important part of a puzzler. Who plays Tetris for the graphics right? The cut scenes have a creative animation style, and the adventure overworld is well designed and easy to navigate. The best part of the visuals is, of course, the Pokemon. It is fun to see how they manipulate the Pokemon’s form to make it fit in the space provided. They essentially are squashed into little balls that retain the look of the original Pokemon. This can lead to some amusing looking Pokeballs. (No pun intended.) Imagine a Blastoise meshed with a beach ball and you get the idea.
Sound:
The sound on this game is good, but very repetitive. There are very few songs used and not very many sound effects. I would have liked to have seen different music for different stages, especially the boss battles. Nothing loses your interest faster than the same tune constantly playing over and over again. I can do that in my head thank you very much.
Control:
Overall, this game controls much like other DS puzzlers. You use the stylus to move the Pokemon left, right, up, and down. The interesting thing about this game is that you are basically moving whole rows and whole columns (like a Rubik’s cube), rather than individual Pokemon. This is convenient considering move real Pokemon would require more strength than the average gamer possesses. This game is easy to control and easy for a beginner to pick up. Unlike the previously mentioned Pokemon.
Gameplay:
This game has four modes of gameplay; Adventure, Endless, Pair, and Battle. In adventure mode, you are following a story line to rescue Pokemon. In the endless mode, you battle at different levels, that well… never end. In the Pair mode, you can team up with someone to get a high score. In Battle mode, you, of course, battle an opponent. Duh. The gameplay itself is fairly simple. You move the Pokemon to form columns and rows of four of the same Pokemon and this causes you to trozei that Pokemon. (Poor Pokemon. That sounds painful.) This in turn makes those four Pokemon disappear. A unique part of this game is that once you line up four Pokemon and they disappear, you have a limited amount of time in which you can line up three and then two Pokemon to make them disappear. If you can set up this 4-3-2 sequence every time, you can really increase your score. This also helps you in the later boss battles, where they give you far less time. I only say this because I’m not the best at this game, and the Aquarella lady keeps trozeing me.
Multiplayer:
This game offers a fun multiplayer experience in the pair and battle modes. The other modes don’t have multiplayer so thus I won’t mention them here. Like many other Nintendo-developed games, this game allows you to download a mini version of the game to your friends. I love that many games are doing this; it is wonderful to be able to play with your friends, even though they may not have the game and they may not be your friends.
OVERALL:
As I stated before, if you are a Pokemon freak and love a good puzzle game, then run to the nearest store and start trozeing. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a boss to beat.
