Preview  Mega Man EXE: Battle Network
- By Francis Bonnet

EXE

Enter the world of Mega Man EXE, a world very different from ours, and from any other Mega Man game for that matter. Mega Man EXE: Battle Network is set in a network society in the near future, where network crimes using computer virus is a huge problem. When one thinks of Mega Man they likely immediately picture classic 2D side-scrolling action, but, in the case of Mega Man EXE– well, that’s just not the case!

Mega Man EXE: Battle Network brings the classic “Blue-Bomber” into new territory. Battle Network is a turn-based action RPG that puts players in the role of Netto, a partner to Mega Man who’s
trying to help save the world. Players assume the role of Netto and fight against computer virus with his partner Mega Man. However, players don’t control Netto directly, rather, they command him to perform tasks for them. In this world, Mega Man is a well-loved icon (like Mickey Mouse) and everyone in the world wants a Mega Man virtual pet. But when an evil computer virus threatens to destroy the virtual world, it’s going to be up to you to program your slave… err, I mean ‘virtual pet’ to go forth and stop the evil before it’s too late. Expect new character designs of Mega Man along with classic characters like Guts Man, Wood Man, Proto man, and more.

Since this game isn’t your regular Mega Man action game, one tends to wonder if it’ll be any good. Well I, for one, am glad that Capcom creates a separate series each time they try to bring Mega Man into a new genre. This gives them the ability to try something new without throwing out the old. Mega Man Legends brought the Blue Bomber into a 3D world for the first time while introducing new RPG-type elements. All three Legends games were good (I’m including Tron Bonne as #3), but many agreed that they weren’t as spectacular as Mega Man’s leap into 3D should have been. Battle Network uses ¾ view; similar to that found in Super Mario RPG. Let’s hope that Capcom can make this series as great as Mega Man Legends should have been.

Mega Man EXE Battle Network is due out in the U.S. this October. A sequel has already been announced so it seems like this series might be around to stay. Keep in mind that Capcom might drop the “EXE” from the title before its release.
