Preview Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge
- By Michael Loewer
The bird and bear duo is at it again: last month at E3 2001, Rare announced the next installment of the Banjo-Kazooie series, titled Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge, to be released on the Game Boy Advance sometime in 2002.
Obviously, the current GBA hardware will be pushed to the limit by Rare and the game looks excellent already—even the plot revolves around an entirely new creative angle. Taking place just after the original Banjo-Kazooie for the N64, Grunty’s Revenge revolves around the existence of parallel universes and timelines. What if certain events had or had not happened in the original—where would the Banjo-Kazooie world be right now? For example, what if Gruntilda had not been rescued by her sisters after being defeated by Banjo and Kazooie in the first adventure? Basically, the title takes events from the first game, and possibly even Banjo-Tooie, and twists them up a little to create a new adventure—a new Banjo-Kazooie reality, if you will.
Most of the same tasks performed on the N64 versions of Banjo-Kazooie can still be done in Grunty’s Revenge. The team still must search for and acquire jiggies and jinjos to progress through the adventure, and can run, fly, flip, and peck along the way to do so. The only major difference is that the GBA requires this title to be played in an overhead view.
Unfortunately, we might have a little bit of a wait until Grunty’s Revenge is released. The game was not on display at E3, and the only footage of the game (of which there are several screens to your right) had no sound. This is not a Christmas title, and neither Nintendo nor Rare is marketing it as such. As said earlier, we’re currently looking at a release date of TBA 2002.
I know I say it all the time, but…more as it develops.
