Preview  Mario and Luigi 2
- By Lander Clinton

Mario and Luigi 2 was one of the few games announced at Nintendo's press conference this year that we didn't already know about. Of course, as soon as the DS was announced I was hoping for a Mario and Luigi game on it, with one screen for Mario and one for Luigi. The game is not quite like that, but looks to expand on its predecessor.

In Mario and Luigi 2, you play as four characters at once, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi. When traveling, the adults carry the babies on their backs, but they can throw them to unreachable places to let them explore. Bear in mind Michael Jackson never actually THREW his baby, and at least we knew who the surrogate mother was. Is Nintendo implying Peach and Daisy are the mothers? Maybe you can deliver the babies in one of the many DS doctor games. Isn't it strange how Yoshi throws his babies at enemies and smashes them in the process?

Anyways, as far as I could tell, no touch screen or microphone gameplay was in the demo. The game does use the main feature of the DS which is often ignored by developers, TWO screens. While exploring, the babies are controlled with X and Y on one screen while the adults are controlled with A and B on the other. This sets up puzzles where you could need four characters in four places to hit switches, a mechanic not seen since Zelda: Four Swords, 50 years ago.

Battles in the game are a mixed bag. On one hand, it sounds really cool, on the other, I only got to play one battle since someone had played the demo before me and there was no way to reset the game or advance to a new area. I'll try to play it some more to write real impressions.

Gotta go!
