Preview  Sonic the Hedgehog Advance
- By Andrew Weatherton

July 10, 2001:
Swilvision.com managed to track down four new screens of Sonic in action on the GBA. You can check them out in the right column of this preview. Looks like there are going to be four playable characters.

June 13, 2001:
You can’t just sneak, this is Sega we’re talking about folks.

As we said earlier in our preview of Monkey Ball, Sega’s E3 booth was accessible by invite only. Those who were on the list received a “Sega” sticker on their badges and were allowed to proceed into the fully-enclosed, VIP booth. Gaming kiosks running GameCube, Game Boy Advance, PS2 and Dreamcast games lined the booth's walls and there was a small lounge composed of several leather sofas located in the center of the booth. The atmosphere inside of Sega’s booth was one of laid-back content and utter coolness, there’s just something neat about playing the only version of Monkey Ball at E3 and not feeling rushed.

Wow, it’s a kiosk. Isn’t that a strange word?

While Monkey Ball may have been our favorite playable game for a Nintendo system offered at Sega’s booth, Sonic the Hedgehog Advance was certainly our favorite non-playable game. StHA was running on a ‘WIDE-BOY64 AGB’ (a device that allows developers to play GBA games on a television through the N64), the game was shown in about 60 seconds of looping footage. The footage showed an opening sequence involving a screen toting Sonic’s 10th anniversary and Sonic running through one level, ‘Neo Hill Zone,’ in which Sonic traversed a large, sandy beach.
Sonic on the GBA!

The game’s speed looked somewhat slower than previous installments in the series, especially when sitting next to Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast, but it was a sight to see. The visuals, speed aside, were fantastic and with the famed 'Sonic Team' behind the title and the GBA’s wide-screen, what’s to worry?
A poem on the game pak, cool beans.

The inscription on the game pak states:

A quick bolt of lightning and Sonic’s his name.

Helping the needy – that’s Sonic’s game!

Speed is his glory, it’s what he does best

Sonic’s the fastest north, south, east, and west.
