Preview Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- By Lander Clinton
With a new show, action figure line, and movie on the way, it's no surprise that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would get another go at a videogame.
Their new adventure has cel-shaded graphics that give it the style of the comics and television shows, and fortunately doesn't have black lines around the edges like most cel-shaded games.
The action is similar to the old NES and SNES games, so much so that only two turtles can be controlled at a time. The game is being developed with the PS2 in mind, and then being ported to GameCube and Xbox. The developers promise that there are pre-set moves which make all 4 turtles work together on screen, but that's really just for show. This game could make for a really fun party game- everyone loves the old 4-player arcade versions, so hopefully they'll listen to us and include a 4-player mode. One more thing that needs imidiate attention- Raphael's run. All the other turtles move normally, but for some reason Raphael's legs kick out to the side like he just got off a horse. It's okay though- we all know Donatello's the best...
The game is linear like the old ones, but the camera swoops around corners so it feels more 3D. The henchmen basically appear in the streets when they should really be jumping off the rooftops or just walking in from offscreen, but that's the kind of thing that can be fixed before release. The button layout is a little odd, with X being jump and Y for ninja stars. It makes doing jump attacks difficult when pressing X, then B. The mousers don't do their signature bite-your-arm attack, but again, that can be fixed.
All of these are minor concerns for brawler fans who will feel like they're playing the arcades of yore (which is now the late 80s, early 90s).
