Preview  e-Reader
- By Eric Tajchman

The e-Reader, or originally called the Card e-Reader, is set to take gaming in a new direction. The e-Reader allows for card gaming and video gaming to join. The cards each contain either a short or long data strip, containing 1.1 kilobytes or 2.2 kilobytes of data. The cards have a variety of functions, such as serving as a simple information display, like swiping a Pikachu Pokemon card through and seeing information on the GBA screen about the little yellow mouse. It can also act as a game extension by unlocking secret or goodies. The cards can even hold entire games, such as Nintendo’s newly announced Game & Watch cards.

An addition to the e-Reader is that it can plug into the GameCube’s GBA-GCN link-up cable via a US-exclusive port on top of the reader. What this might entail about future games is beyond prediction, but considering the announcement of Animal Crossing e-Card, it is likely that these could unlock some items in the GCN game.

The e-Reader is set to debut one September 16, 2002 at an MSRP of $39.99. Expect lots of unique gameplay with this quirky little add-on.
