Preview WaveBird Controller
- By Eric Tajchman
Nintendo is planning on bringing GameCube fun to you without the worry of cords or connections. Enter the WaveBird. Utilizing Bluetooth technology, the WaveBird can work at an advertised 6 meters away, though it reportedly can work up to much longer distances and even through walls (though playing behind a wall means not seeing the game and is not recommended). That said, you will never have to worry about the WaveBird not being able to communicate with the console.
Originally, the WaveBird was set to release alongside Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem on June 24, but following a recent press announcement, Nintendo has upped the release date to June 10. Also, the expected retail price was set at $39.99, but Nintendo has recently dropped the price to $34.99, as well as lowering the price of the normal controller to $24.99.
Interestingly, the WaveBird seems to be the choice controller among the higher gaming icons, such as Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, and Shigeru Miyamoto, all around gaming uber-guru. During a recent unveiling of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Dyack was seen playing a demo of the game on a WaveBird at about 30 meters away and at one point even through a wall. At this year’s E3, footage of Mario being played shown upon the large main screen. When Miyamoto was asked to talk some about Mario, he stood up from the audience and started to walk to the front, WaveBird in hand, having played the game all the while from the crowd.
Come June 10, 2002, you too can be able to play your Cube from however far as you like, granted that it’s no more than 30 meters.
