Preview Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
- By Michael Loewer
Jango Fett, the father of Boba Fett appearing in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode II, is set to make his interactive debut this fall on the GameCube in Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, brought to you by LucasArts. Players will be plunged into the dark and deadly world of a bounty hunter, a role Star Wars fans have been requesting in gameplay form for some time. No specific release date has been announced, but as already said, Bounty Hunter is expected to be released hopefully in Fall 2002. While the title is slated to appear on the GameCube and Playstation 2, there's really no doubt the Cube version will be markedly better in all areas. After all, on the PS2, Jango's pixelated, non-antialiased form just won't look right.
The gameplay experience will take place sometime between Episode I and II, and so will be an original third-person action game not directly based on any existing movie. It will establish Jango Fett's place in the Star Wars universe, including his connection to the infamous clone army. Bounty Hunter is said to draw players into Fett's sinister existence, where thieves, assassins, and far worse thrive. Players will be able to explore the rarely seen dark side of the Star Wars galaxy while tracking down the elusive leader of a deadly and mysterious cult, while at the same time competing against a dangerous rival from Fett's past in a quest to do what else -- capture the ultimate bounty, dead or alive.
Tom Byron, Director of Product Marketing for LucasArts:
"Because of Boba Fett's amazing legacy Star Wars fans have been requesting a bounty hunter game from LucasArts for years. Star Wars Bounty Hunter will make their wait well worth it, delivering the intense, suspense-filled experience players want and expect. Like his legendary son, Jango Fett is mysterious and powerful. He's the ultimate anti-hero who defines much of what's cool about Star Wars."
Gameplay will revolve around intense combat and physical action in the pursuit of prey and bounty across six worlds and 18 total levels. Jango Fett will face off against against a myriad of characters, including crime lords, corrupt politicians, enemies of various species, and the previously mentioned ruthless arch-rival from Fett's past. He'll be equipped with a nice arsenal of weaponry, such as dual blaster pistols, flame thrower, missiles, and a rather distinctive jetpack that players will recognize after viewing Episode II.
The development of Bounty Hunter has utilized the use of two of LucasArts' sister companies, Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound. This will mark the first time ever that multiple companies in the Lucas group have combined their efforts in the production of a single game. ILM will be responsible for the cinematics, while Skywalker Sound will of course be responsible for sound effects and musical scores.
A preview trailer of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter can be found as a bonus item on the recently released Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, if you happen to pick it up.
