Preview Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
- By Lander Clinton
"Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc" is being developed for GameCube and Game Boy Advance, and both versions were on display at last week's E3.
The story, at least for the GBA version, starts with Rayman's friend swallowing some bad clams, according to lead designer Kevin Guillemette. As Rayman's people have no necks, it is not clear how they swallow anything (and you thought I was going for a dirty joke about swallowing bad clams- for shame).
The graphics are certainly up-to-par with Rayman's last GBA outing, and even feature some Mode 7 racing levels on water skis, which were Guillemette's idea.
Skis aren't the only way Rayman can get around. He can also fly on TNT barrels and use his twirling ears to jump large gaps.
Unlike the Mode 7 levels where you can see obstacles in the distance, the barrel-flying levels are side-scrolling, which makes it hard to see the large pillars in your way unless you memorize their patterns.
Obviously, Rayman can see the obstructions in his way since he's looking at them, but he just waits there with his mouth gaping open until you tell him where to move! What is this, a videogame? If only Squaresoft was making this game, then we could just sit back and watch the whole thing and not have to play at all!
The GBA game won't connect to the GameCube game for two reasons: they're not being developed by the same people, and the GameCube version will be the same as the PS2 one, negating any connectivity possibilities.
I didn't get much of a chance to play the GameCube game. I played a racing level which had two characters, neither Rayman, running on foot through a course with multiple paths.
Expect more on Rayman for GameCube and GBA soon.
