Preview  Dragonball Z Collectible Card Game
- By Eric Tajchman

I myself have a very extensive collection of Dragonball Z CCG cards. After a bad incident at my local gaming store, though, I was stuck with over 1200 cards, 300 bucks gone, and 1 year to think about what does and does not constitute as a threat to an annoying little kid with the biggest Pokemon card collection ever. Then I heard about Infogrames’ plans to bring a game based on the collectible card game to the Game Boy Advance. Needless to say, I was thrilled.

The basic premise of the game is this: use a deck of 75 cards or less to attack, defend, level up, and collect all 7 Dragonballs and defeat your opponent. You are one of several main protagonists or antagonists from the anime series that must fight using physical and energy combat cards, drill cards, and non-combat cards.

Your main character consists of 3 to 5 different level cards symbolizing each character’s level of power. You can access the higher cards by increasing your anger to a level of 5, at which point you can use the next highest personality card at its highest level. Specialized attacks or defenses can affect both yours and your opponent’s anger level. Your character also has a unique ability for each personality card, varying from a drill to an attack or a non-combat deck affect.

Each Personality has 11 power stages. Physical attacks drop your power stages depending on yours and your opponent’s current power level and other factors stated on the attack. When your power stage is at 0, then you lose cards in your deck, the life deck. Energy attacks cost 3 power stages to perform but immediately do 4 life cards of damage unless otherwise stated.

The game is much more complicated, but this is a general overview of the game. If they are able to integrate all the complexities and intricacies of the game, then Infogrames’ title may be one of the games to watch. Look for Dragonball Z Collectible Card Game to release in June 2002.
