Preview Galleon: Islands of Mystery
- By Lander Clinton
This game is all about some castaways who get stranded on a desert island. The “mystery” involves how the professor can make a radio out of a coconut but he can’t fix a hole in a boat. Galleon, or “L’il Buddy,” will provide the comic relief.
Okay, so that was all made up, and no, this has nothing to do with “Survivor,” either. Galleon is being developed by Toby Gard, the same guy who created “Tomb Raider,” and who I’m blackmailing over some of the original pictures of Lara Croft he drew (she’s a man, folks).
Galleon’s main character is Captain Rhama Sabrier, who sails into the port of Akbah and discovers a mysterious ship that holds some magical herbs. Look at the angular people in the screenshots and guess what kind of herbs they are...
So Rhama sets off to find out what happened to the ship and is aided by several friends, including ninja Mihoko and healer Faith, proving that women and seamen go together. To solve puzzles and overcome terrain, Rhama can run, jump, stop-drop-and-roll, climb walls, flip, and swim. Later, Rhama will learn magical powers that include swimming like a dolphin and jumping really high to reach new areas. He can even take silicone implants out of his pockets and juggle them for all the “Tomb Raider” fans. Okay, you caught me, I lied— people don’t have magical powers...
Combat is based on the lock-on system used in “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” but allows you to fight multiple enemies at once using the GameCube’s C-stick.
Gard and his company, Confounding Factor, have worked on Galleon since 1998 and expect to release it for the GameCube in March, 2002.

 Have you seen any Seamen?
I can't comment, but know that it was dirty...
This guy is way too fanatical about the Oscars...
