Preview  Barbarian
- By Michael Loewer

What makes Barbarian different from your average fighter?

Basically, publisher Titus and development house Saffire Studios are attempting to blend the genres of fighting and RPG to create an entirely unique gaming experience. Because of this, NGenres.com considers this title to be an Adventure/RPG, because Titus intends the fighting to be but a backdrop to the supposedly deep and involving storyline.

Plot:

Heroes of Barbaria have waged war since the dawn of time, ravaging the Earth as they battle with weapons and magic alike. Their motives to stop the madness forged by the evil Zaugg are more than ending his growing power. Who they are, why they quest, and what they will become is destiny. Only one has the power to succeed!

Each character (ten total), has his or her own massive story and goals that must be uncovered through the battles of the Quest mode. Players will be able to choose from among 300 different plot branches, knowing that every battle they win or lose and every choice made will affect the rest of the story. Characters can be upgraded, enhancing such traits as their physical and magical attacks, the ability to lift objects and other characters, increase speed, etc. These are the RPG elements spoken of before, since only success in battle and the choosing of certain plotlines will result in the upgrades.

One to four players can compete simultaneously with up to eight different fighters on screen at the same time. In the same fashion as Pokemon, players will follow their character's journey in Quest mode, complete upgrades, save it to their memory card, and then challenge their weak, puny friends in the Combat mode.

What all is included?

  • 10 different characters each with their own massive storyline and quest.
  • 10 huge multi-level figthing arenas.
  • 300 different story branches.
  • RPG Character upgrade system depending on experience earned.
  • Upgradable attacks and magic combos.
  • Interactive environment: Almost every object appearing on screen can be picked up (depending on your lifting ability), thrown or used as a weapon (including other characters).
  • Additional mini-quests with new fighting rules.
  • Sophisticated tutorial.
  • Multi-Player Combat Mode: 1-4 players fighting simultaneously and 2-8 characters can fight on screen at the same time.

Only a few pictures are scattered throughout this preview. This is because frankly, Titus already has a site up containing more Barbarian media than we could ever attempt to transfer here.

TITUS' BARBARIAN SITE

They've got a huge picture archive, covering the "Good," "Bad,", and "Lonely" characters, plus one for the Arenas. There are 11 detailed movies, plus a screensaver and wallpaper. For anyone looking forward to this game, this is the link to click.

Enjoy.
