News   New GameCube Controller and Logo Announced
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 05.12.2001

Recently, a brand new GameCube logo with a futuristic twist began surfacing on the web. The general conjecture was that the new logo was indeed official, since the rumor surrounding the design was that it was leaked early by Nintendo insiders. Apparently, Nintendo was to make the new logo truly official with an announcement at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

However, the staff of Planet GameCube attending this year's E3 noticed the logo yet again while observing Nintendo's in-house booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and found that it is indeed official.

Who else has goosebumps?

But wait, there's more...

As if a new logo weren't cool enough, Nintendo also today released official pics of the 3rd-generation GameCube controller. Comparison shots of the original and new controllers can be found at right.

The original 1st-generation GCN controller, as you can see, had a rather large primary "A" button surrounded by three smaller, kidney-shaped secondary buttons. Also noticeable were rather short hand grips and a red, centrally located, "Start" button. Remember that seemingly everyone who had a chance to hold this original controller found it to be exceptionally comfortable, including our very own Editor-in-Chief, Andrew Weatherton.

The 2nd-generation controller (not shown) was shipped to development houses a few months after SpaceWorld 2000, the only major change being longer handles better suited to the US market.

This newest model, the 3rd-generation, is for the most part the final production design. The most noticeable change, at least from the official pics, deal with the button layout. Basically, the far-left kidney-shaped button (or the old "B" button) is now a regular circular shape, and has changed colors from green to red. This makes sense--Nintendo has kept the historical A/B button layout (except for "A" now being the fully primary action button), with the kidney-shaped buttons serving secondary functions, not unlike the C-buttons on the N64 controller or the X/Y buttons on the SNES controller. Finally, the "Start" button has been reduced in size and painted gray, thereby better blending it in with the rest of the controller.

Remember, however, that Shigeru Miyamoto stated at the GameCube unveiling that not all controller features had been revealed. This may be the final design layout, but what further secrets does the GCN controller have to offer?

Oooh, yet more goosebumps...
