News   "Pacman Vs." Naked Cowboy
- Posted By Lander Clinton, 05.06.2004

Proving that their parents spend way too much money on tuition, New York University students will act out a 20-year-old videogame this Saturday in Greenwich Village.

"I really had nothing better to teach," said Frank Lantz, the NYU professor who gave the live Pac-Man assignment. "These kids have all the modern games, I thought it would be neat to show them how their parents used to play videogames."

Members of Lantz's generation remember wearing yellow blob suits, picking up dots, and being chased by ghosts on the streets of New York all too well. While many look back with fond memories, others say "Never Again."

"I thought this was behind us," said Oldie Oldson, 38, who arrived to protest the reenactment. "I played the Pac-Man, and those ghosts still haunt me to this day. The hunt is all too real. It's cruel and it should be stopped."

The characters' movements will be controlled by five telecommunications students, who will instruct them using cell phones from a room with a game map. They will use the map to update the latest position of the players and to see where to send them next. The students will make sure no one is harmed during the game.

"They told us the same thing 20 years ago," said Oldson, "when the ghosts surround you, the monitors just look the other way, and you have no choice but to fold in on yourself... and the incessent beeps and wakkas... NO! NO! It's all in the past! Why won't the beeping stop!!!"
