The launch of Pokemon Crystal for the Game Boy Color shows just how incredibly popular the beloved Pokemon franchise is, selling nearly 600,000 copies in its first two weeks of availability.
So far in 2001, three of the four hottest-selling titles in the video game industry are Pokemon products (surprise) -- with the current Pokemon Crystal following the lead of the record-setting Pokemon Gold and Silver games. To date, Pokemon games have sold more than 85 million copies worldwide.
Pokemon Crystal is the newest release in the Pokemon Gold and Silver series, the two biggest-selling video game titles in 2000. For the first time, Pokemon Crystal offers players the option to be a female trainer. Both male and female trainers can explore this adventure to uncover new events and unsolved mysteries in the Pokemon world. No comment has yet been made on whether the new female trainer "throws the Pokeballs like a girl."
Peter Main, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo of America states:
"Pokemon is an established icon around the world and American kids have come to praise Pokemon for its engaging and invigorating entertainment. The incredible launch of Pokemon Crystal comes as no surprise to video game retailers -- they've seen this all before -- and Pokemania continues across the product spectrum."
Evidence of Pokemon's continued popularity includes:

Just kidding about that Prima picture above. Seriously though, was she hot or what? I don't care if Ash is 10 years old or not, I KNOW his eyes were drifting. Every boy (and probably a few girls) in the damn country had to be staring at one point or another.
I need to get outside more. Anyway...
The animated TV show, which has been rated No. 1 with boys, ages 2 to 11, and girls, ages 6 to 11, nearly every week since the launch of the 2000 fall season. A new season launches this September with 52 new episodes subtitled "Johto League Champions."
Editor's Note: Hopefully Ash and Misty finally get their freak on this season, since you know they've wanted to for like, ever.

Pokemon 4: The Movie -- Celebi: A Timeless Encounter hit Japanese theaters on July 7 and Pokemon 3: The Movie hits U.S. home video August 21, distributed by Warner Home Video.
The Pokemon Fun Fest, an interactive play center, is making its mark at Six Flags Theme Parks across the nation. The Pokemon Fun Fest is bringing the excitement of the Pokemon games live to children of all ages. Hopefully, they'll come to Texas so I can go -- for educational value only, of course.
Complementing the Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal video game line-up, Wizards of the Coast Inc. released the Card Neo "Discovery" edition in July, with an extended library of cards featuring characters from the latest series.
In the Pokemon tradition of creating innovative gaming experiences, the Pokemon Card-eReader combines Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and the Pokemon Trading Card Game, merging the virtual world with conventional trading cards to create a new way to play. It is expected to launch in 2002.
Whether you feel it's a fun game or a plague on society, the Pokemon franchise is going to stick around for a while. In 2000, Pokemon products earned retail revenues exceeding $4.3 billion in the United States alone. With that level of earnings, you can be sure Nintendo will do anything it can to keep the franchise fresh and young gamers clamoring for more.
Senior Editor Michael Loewer, signing off.
