News   Positive Repurcussions at $99.99
- Posted By Jeff Calaway, 11.02.2003

Nintendo is reporting that sales of its GameCube have quadrupled following the price cut from $149.99 to $99.99 less than two weeks ago.

"Clearly, this move is what game players desired and also what our retail partners wanted," said George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications at Nintendo of America. "We're already receiving requests for additional shipments of Nintendo GameCube systems between now and the holidays."

"The price cut is working great," added Dan DeMatteo, president of GameStop. "Our sales of Nintendo GameCube have increased more than fourfold. We are currently increasing our shipment requests for the system throughout the holidays."

Though the short-term effects seem overly positive, the real question is whether the price drop can keep the increased sales pace during the upcoming holiday season. Nintendo's lack of any first-party software in the coming months, which are the the usual big sellers on Nintendo systems. However, The GameCube's competition, Microsoft's X-Box and Sony's Playstation 2, are both currently priced at $179.99 with no company planning on a price drop, so with Nintendo again offering a console at a noticeable price difference with a large library of hit games such as Super Smash Brothers: Melee and Metroid Prime, it'll be hard for any person who hasn't invested in a GameCube already to miss this chance.
