Today at a press conference Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed the next cel-shaded Zelda for 2004, announced a new Donkey Kong for GameCube, and hinted at a big new product in Nintendo's future.
Iwata gave no details about the content of any games or the secret product, except that it would be "surprising and unique." Iwata mentioned the product around the same time he talked about Sony's upcoming PSP not being a threat to GBA.
Donkey Kong, along with the next Starfox, is being developed by Namco, which not too many years ago put all of its resources behind the original Playstation since it didn't like working with either Nintendo or Sega. Nintendo seems very committed to working with third party developers now, but Iwata said Nintendo has no intentions of buying a big third party company completely.
Donkey Kong may be a variation on the original 1981 arcade game and not the Rare outings, just as Nintendo is making a variation on Namco's original Pac-Man game.
Speaking of Rare, it seems Microsoft's publishing deal with THQ is finally coming to fruition, and we can look forward to seeing Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge on the GBA in September. A team from Rare actually worked with Nintendo on the recent Donkey Kong Country GBA remake, so there doesn't appear to be any bad blood between the companies like when Square left.
At the press conference Iwata also announced a version of Wario Ware for the GameCube would ship this year in Japan. Iwata gave no indication if it would link with the GBA game.
From original DK to Wario Ware microgames, Nintendo's overall theme seems to be simple games that anyone can play and enjoy. The company said that most games today are too complicated and are alienating non-gamers. I can see that- anyone remember seeing random television usage of the N64 controller? People didn't even know how to hold the thing (it's still genius, though).
I think the GBA's biggest selling-point is its ease-of-use, but I hope Nintendo doesn't take console games back a step, that's why we have the GBA link cable, so we can enjoy both high-end 3D games and the latest addictive 2D wonder. Just like Arnold Schwazenegger and Gary Coleman both running for California governor. One's impressive but not understandable to all people, and one is portable and nostalgic. Nintendo should tie them together with link cables...
