News   Donkey Kong Record Broken
- Posted By Francis Bonnet, 07.18.2003

Congratulations to Steve Wiebe, who broke the 879,200-point record set last year by a New York man in the original Donkey Kong game.

Wiebe scored over 900,000 points in the 22nd level of the Donkey Kong and sent the video footage of his win to Twin Galaxies, the definitive scorekeeping organization for gamers.

Wiebe had been trying for a while to break the 879,200-point score. A few nights a week when his kids had gone to bed and his wife was out working, Wiebe would go into his garage and video tape his play time. It was only a matter of time before he would video tape himself beating the high score. "Since I'd been trying so long, it wasn't like I jumped out of my chair or anything (when I got that score)," he said.

So what happens when you reach the 22nd level of Donkey Kong? You get a "kill screen," a level that's impossible to beat. Even if there were no obsticles, there's no way that "Jumpman" could complete it given the limited amount of time.

Billy Mitchell, who held the previous record for almost 20 years (before Wiebe and before the NY guy) said he's planning something big and "unprecidented" in response to the recent record-breakings.

I now return you to your regularly schedlued web-surfing.
