News   Iwata Looks to the Future
- Posted By Francis Bonnet, 05.29.2003

Satoru Iwata, current president of our favorite company in the world, spoke about Nintendo's future at a press conference in Kyoto this morning.

Mr. Iwata stated that he plans to heavily use a significant portion of Nintendo's savings of about $6 billion into the research and development of "... the greatest gaming machines ever." Namely, the successors to both Gamecube and Gameboy Advance. Perhaps they can have the new Gameboy out before Sony launches their PSP (PlayStation Portable).

Mr. Iwata also spoke on the future of Nintendo's franchises. He hopes to create franchises that that appeal to older gamers, which could become as popular as Mario and Pokemon. Apparently, character development for new franchises is already underway - and hopefully these new franchises will lead to a larger share of the gaming market for Nintendo.

This is most excellent news for Nintendo fans... my only concern is that Nintendo doesn't lose sight of their current properties. Mario and Pokemon games aren't only for kids and Nintendo already has franchises marketed towards the older gamer like Metroid and Eternal Darkness, and to a certain degree, Zelda. But with that worry aside, I'm very excited about what new games Nintendo has in store.
