News   Final Fantasy Impressions
- Posted By Lander Clinton, 05.15.2003

After much speculation, I can finally say that Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is very cool and a lot of fun with four players. I have no idea how it would work with one player right now, so I have to focus on the way it's meant to be played.

Each player wields a GBA connected to the Cube. One player has a map of the area on their GBA, while everyone else just has stats. Pressing Select allows you to flip between GameCube play and GBA menus.

The game is like Gauntlet in some ways (finding keys to open doors), but each character has a Final Fantasy range of moves. Since everything's in real time and you're playing with a GBA, each person can only do their currently-selected move. You flip through up to 4 moves using L and R, and change which 4 are available in the GBA menus.

When you press A, your character stays in place and a Pikmin-like targeting cursor pops up so you can choose where your current move will go. If you want to attack or use a damaging spell, put the target over an enemy. If you want to use an item or a curative spell, put it over an ally.

All of your allies must remain close, since the story of the game goes that a terrible smog covers the land, and only when near a certain crystal can people breathe easily. Someone must always carry that crystal to the party's next destination, then drop it to fight.

The game takes a good deal of strategizing and coordinating, since you can't enter the GBA screens during a boss fight without getting plastered by the boss. It's best to have a balanced party and anticipate which spells you'll need in your set of 4.

It seems like this could wind up being one really fun party game or niche title, since not everyone has a GBA on them with a link cable, but rest assured it's a fun time.
