News   Sword of Mana
- Posted By Eric Tajchman, 05.14.2003

Nestled among countless other major titles from a variety of talented develoeprs sat a GBA SP loaded with Sword of Mana, a prequel to the legendary Mana series that has spanned over 10 years and 3 separate gaming platforms. Now, the title returns to a Nintendo system, and the first impressions of the game are very, very good.

First off, let me say that Sword of Mana is one of the most graphically impressive games ever, just second to the Golden Sun series (and just barely at that). The gameplay itself is exactly the same as what you would expect from a Mana game. The game is more action/adventure than RPG, although you are able to learn spells, find and use items, and even gain experience to increase your HP and stats. The Ring menu system return, so veterans of the series should have no toruble at all adapting to the Game Boy Advance title. The battle system isn't turn-based but rather a mixture of Zelda-style hack 'n slash with a sprinkling of RPG elements for falvor. The result is a game that is very fun indeed.

In the game itself, you play as Hero, a gladiator slave who must battle a ferocious monster and please the crowds of the Dark Lord to gain his freedom. However, it is soon discovered that the Dark Lord had killed Hero's parents, who were in fact the former duke and duchess of the land before the Dark Lord overthrew and killed them. Hero vows revenge, but soon learns that the Dark Lord is trying to find the Mana Tree to harness its power for evil, and only he is the one who is able to prevent the Dark Lord from succeeding.

More info to come shortly.
