News   Starfox - UPDATED
- Posted By Eric Tajchman, 05.15.2003

UPDATE: After speaking with a Namco representative, it was revelaed that Starfox is indeed a 3D shooter like the original ad Starfox 64. However, only the multiplayer was shown so that the true unveiling of the game would wait until later on when development is more complete.

One of the major surprises here at E3 was the official unveiling of the Namco-developed Starfox. Although the game was originally touted as a 3D shooter, a return to the series, the game is actually a multiplayer third-person shooter featuring the cast of Starfox battling each other on foot.

The game plays very much like Jet Force Gemini for the Nintendo 64 with the ability to use Starfox-native vehicles, such as the fighter aircraft Arwing and the Landmaster hover tank.

The game shown was very basic in every department except for gameplay, which was action-packed, hectic and a little confusing. The graphics were a little above polished N64 visuals, though the framerate remained smooth and constant at 30 FPS. I was unable to hear any sound clearly as the E3 convention center was loud.

The game itself showed Fox, Slippy, Falco, and Crystal from Dinosaur Planet battling each other for little reason except just to do it. It was fun, but some of the controls and gameplay were a little confusing to grasp. Moving uses the R-trigger plus the control stick, starfing uses the L-trigger plus the control stick, aiming uses the C-Stick, and firing uses the big 'ol green A-button. Fox and friends could also jump around using the X-button and even pilot famous vehicles from the Starfox universe, though the tank seems unnaturally weak and the Arwing unnaturally invincible. Once i found a tank, I boarded it using the Z-button and set out to find myself a victim, only to realize that I soon as I found him, he shot me 7 times with the default weapon and the tank combusted into flames. On the other hand, It seems like whoever found the Arwing in the game couldn't be stopped. It was impossibly difficult to aim successfully into the air without considerable practice, and the Arwing can fly away over walls, gather up silver rings to replenish health, and even perform barrel rolls that can deflect any shot.

Although the game was decidedly average, this is only an E3 build, and a very basic one at that. We'll keep you posted on the status of this title when we get more information. However, don't expect this title out anytime before Q2 2004
