News   Zelda Tears Up Europe
- Posted By Francis Bonnet, 05.08.2003

We've been enjoying The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in the U.S. for well over a month, but the title was just released in Europe this weekend. As you may remember, Zelda sold like hotcakes here and even increased Gamecube hardware sales by 20%. Looks like Zelda has also run wild in Europe.

Over the weekend Nintendo sold 80,000 copies of Zelda in the U.K. alone and over 300,000 copies all across Europe. That's a whole lot of copies. And what about hardware sales? Well, Gamecube hardware sales have more than tripled in Europe since Zelda released, which is great news for the Nintendo company as a whole. The European market has been very similar to the U.S. market in the fact that Gamecube and Xbox have been struggling to become the #2 best-selling console (PS2's #1 position is untouchable at this point).

David Gosen, managing director at Nintendo of Europe commented, “The sales for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker have been phenomenal this weekend and we are working very hard to ensure our European retailers continue to have enough stock to meet consumer demand. These excellent sales reflect our belief that this is the most eagerly anticipated game of the year and a very important title for Nintendo GameCube.”

Congratulations to Nintendo of Europe!
