News   Welcome to the Videogame Channel
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 08.06.2001

As stated, Comcast is the corporation behind the now successful E! Entertainment Television, and yes, this new digital cable channel will focus SOLELY on videogames. The channel launch is scheduled for sometime in 2002, and will be formally named G4 -- to be fully funded by Comcast. Instead of amateur gamers, G4 will focus on more hard-core gaming with much of the programming dedicated to previewing and reviewing of the latest games.

Honestly, it's about time a company with the funds to do so launched an all-gaming channel. The videogame industry is now worth an estimated $7 billion per year, with sales of gaming merchandise already up 28% from last year.

The network is the brain-child of Charles Hirschorn, former head of Disney's animation unit, and office space has supposedly already been secured in Los Angeles as a base of operations. Former Senior Vice President of E! Debra Green will promote the launch of G4 and serve as network CEO. Former E! Senior Vice President of Marketing Dale Hopkins will be the head of G4's advertising/affiliate department.

Let's just hope they bring in some real hard-core gamers as consultants to make sure this doesn't turn out totally lame. Speaking of which, my schedule looks free for next year, so if anyone at E! or Comcast wants to contact me...
