News   Show Me Yours And I'll Show You Mine...
- Posted By Lander Clinton, 11.27.2002

Not since Tuvok and Neelix got beamed together as one person on Star Trek: Voyager has a merge come to my attention where one party's name sounds like "elix." Confused? Okay, that was a long way to go to show off my nerd skills. I'll start over:

Square and Enix announced today that a merge between their companies would take effect next April. All Square shares will become Enix shares, so Enix will be the dominant company of the merge.

Don't expect this to be an elaborate April Fool's Day joke, as Square has had major financial diffuculty for several years now.

In 1998 or 1999 Square announced a partial merger with EA, where each company would only receive 80% profit of their own games and 20% of the other company's games.

After the disastrous Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within bombed in America AND Japan, Square started looking for money options, including releasing remake after remake of old games and forming the company that will allow them to put Final Fantasy games on Nintendo systems.

Although Square bounced back with Kingdom Hearts (ironically no help from "The Bouncer"), many of their PSX and PS2 games haven't lived up to the incredible expectations placed upon them, tarnishing the company's image.

Merging with Enix will assure Square financial support in the long run, while Enix will get support in the short run. Square can pump out games that sell well at first, funding Enix's over perfection of the Dragon Quest series. Dragon Quest games almost create national holidays in Japan when they hit shelves once a decade or so, which will support Square's efforts.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong about the following, but I believe Square recently purchased the Ogre Battle license from Atlus, which will essentially create one massive RPG conglomerate. All I know is, that better be one hot princess we have to rescue...
