News   Nokia Versus Nintendo
- Posted By Francis Bonnet, 11.04.2002

Nokia, the popular cell phone company, has recently announced at a mobile internet conference in Munich, Germany, that they would be releasing seven new products, one of which is a cell phone that doubles as a handheld console.

This device, tentatively called the "N-Gage", will allow gamers to play software by simply plugging a memory card into their phone, which of course will feature a color screen. Nokia believes the handheld market is "under-developed" so the N-Gage will be in direct competition with Nintendo's Gameboy Advance.

It is not known what software is being developed for the N-Gage, but supposedly Sega has signed on as a software developer. This announcement also revealed that Nokia intends on becoming a software developer, so expect to see games by them when the system is released in February 2003.

My take on this? Nintendo fans need not worry, many companies have tried to take on Nintendo in the handheld market and all have failed; Atari Lynx, Turbo Xpress, Sega Game Gear, Game.com, Neo Geo Pocket just to name a few. The original Gameboy outlasted them all. I don't think gamers will take this N-Gage seriously enough to make much of a dent in Gameboy Advance's hold on the market. I imagine the price for this little toy will be two or three times the price of the GBA, which will definitely turn off gamers and parents. Besides, Nintendo recently announced a Gameboy Advance cell phone in Japan. Nokia just doesn't have the Marios or the Zeldas to woo gamers to their little corner of the ring.
