News   Why Did The Animal Cross The Road?
- Posted By Lander Clinton, 08.07.2002

Nintendo launched a contest yesterday for gamers to participate in a nation-wide focus group for its unique communication game, Animal Crossing.

The winners, who must be in groups of two and explain why they should win above all other applicants, will be the first Americans to play Animal Crossing after its successful debut in Japan.

These "Animal Crossing Pioneers" will receive an early copy of Animal Crossing and will provide Nintendo with feedback about the game's limitless virtual neighborhood.

"Animal Crossing is a unique title that has to be experienced firsthand to be truly understood and appreciated. Its success in Japan, with over 700,000 units sold, inspired us to want to get feedback as soon as possible from U.S. players," said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc.

Nintendo has often been wary of bringing unique titles to the U.S. for fear they won't sell well. I'm still waiting for Doshin the Giant. Nintendo was even worried that the original Legend of Zelda would be too strange and complicated for an American audience, and is just now learning that the more they innovate the more we love them.

Nintendo will choose 125 teams after the deadline of Aug. 12. Apply at www.nintendo.com/animalcrossing. Animal Crossing launches Sept. 16.
