News   Cyberathlete Professional League
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 06.25.2002

I damn well better not be the only guy around who fondly remembers The Wizard from sometime around 1990. The plot revolved around the Nintendo VideoGame Championships, and two brothers' quest to get there -- one normal, the other a gaming idiot savant. Without going too far into the wonders of being in elementary school when that movie (and Super Mario Bros. 3 -- dear god) came out, I have to ask, what would a modern gaming championship be like? Apparently, they were common back in the 80s, Atari even held a few, but nothing like that really exists anymore.

Or so you thought...

Angel Munoz, a 42-year-old gaming fanatic, would like to have people playing videogames professionally, basically as a recognized sport. He's officially founded the Cyberathlete Professional League, which already hosts several professional gaming tournaments around the world. Top gamers are pitted against each other in front of live audiences -- get ready to say my name, bitch.

Angel Munoz:

"Our goal is to have a weekly program that would cover the online amateur league, qualifying the matches, and finally the world championship. We have to carve through the idea that the competitions ar about as exciting as a chess game."

How does one make this thing more popular? Well, luckily for Angel, the G4 Channel is launching around the country, and for those not in the know, it's dedicated to gaming. Even our old pal Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher from Next Generation) is hosting one of the daily shows. Woohoo!

Thanks to CEO Tariq Bashir's favorite magazine, MAXIM, for the scoop. He's a big fan of the busty, half-naked women.
