News   Nintendo Power Advance Magazine to Launch
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 06.01.2001

In the mail recently I received a subscription advertisement from Nintendo Power. Normally I just throw them away, since one can get all the information online at almost zero cost.

However, this particular letter caught my eye. It showed a magazine with the title of Nintendo Power Advance. Interesting, I thought to myself, that Nintendo feels so confident about the Game Boy Advance niche market that they're now dedicating an entire magazine to it.

Historically, Nintendo Power has always covered both the consoles and Game Boy handhelds. Remember, too, that while I don't have the actual numbers in my hands, I believe the Game Boy is the highest selling gaming "system" of all time. There must be thousands upon thousands of titles available for it. When one gets to thinking about it, you start to realize that the Game Boy should have received its own magazine long ago--coverage thus far has been but a fraction of what our favorite handheld has to offer.

Consider that this is also a rather intelligent business move for Nintendo. The company knows that millions of gamers will buy both the Game Boy Advance and the mighty Gamecube without a second thought (I know I will). A second magazine means twice the subscription revenue, and money in the bank.

Let's see, that's $18 a year, times, oh, maybe 10 million Nintendo Power Advance subscribers...not bad. Another possibility is that Nintendo will start out Nintendo Power Advance as a semi-monthly mag (like Nintendo Power's first year) to test the waters. Regardless, it'll be a welcome addition to the Nintendo Power family.

Anyway, according to Nintendo, the first issue should feature reviews and previews of launching GBA games, up-to-date news, and possibly strategy guides for highly anticipated games such as Super Mario Advance, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity. Look for it sometime this month--I can't believe it's already June.

Remember, the Game Boy Advance launches on June 11--only 10 days from now!
