News   Adult Games for Underage Gamers
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 04.29.2002

Penny-Arcade recently ran an article concerning a current legal case in which a federal judge ruled that local communities CAN prohibit access to certain videogames within their legal jurisdiction. Several games were brought before the judge, including the always enjoyable Doom, as examples of those that should be banned. The judge ruled that he found absolutely nothing in the games that he would quantify as speech, only violence and sometimes profanity (ignoring of course the creative process that goes into game development). Because speech was nonexistent in the games, they're therefore not protected by the first amendment, and access can be severely limited by cities and towns.

BULL. CRAP.

Keep in mind that what I'm about to say is completely unsupported by the rest of NGenres.com, at least officially. I, personally, will do whatever I need to do to get any legitimate game into the hands of any legitimate gamer that wants it. This means that while I certainly won't assist anyone in getting one of the infamous post-3DO-downfall porn games (not that they don't sound like fun), I will help a 14-year-old hardcore gamer get his hands on GTA3 or Eternal Darkness.

The fact is, games do not cause children to become social deviants or psychopaths. They were either already completely screwed up to begin with, or their parents weren't all that good at the job of parenting.

So, if you're an "underage" gamer living in an area with new gaming access restrictions, send me a message. We'll talk about it...
