So why is 2002 the Year Of Nintendo? This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles is the place where everyone will find out; where the largest collection of the biggest and bestest games for one system will be united for all gamers to see. Every Wednesday leading up to E3, this feature will list the different games expected to be at E3 so you know exactly what will be shown. This way, our reader count won’t suddenly drop as a lot of Nintendo fans are overwhelmed and eventually go mad over the greatness coming this year and next.
Updated again to include what to expect and not to expect from a lot of major third-party developers.
Resident Evil 0 (developed by Capcom)
--By now, everyone’s heard of, seen, and basically drooled their keyboard to doom over the revamped Resident Evil original. But how’s the prequel, the Biohazard project first slated for the N64? At E3, we’ll all find out. According to some sources, it looks better than the remake. Expect new info and screens at E3, and consider buying a new keyboard.
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO (developed by Capcom)
--The arcade brawler is being ported to the GameCube. Yey!! There’s been a lot of anticipation surrounding this game, as it will be the system’s second fighter, and though Bloody Roar: Primal Fury was fun and entertaining, it was still a little rough around the edges. Expect
CAS Ra (developed by Capcom)
--Nobody knows what this exclusive title is about. Could it be an RPG, or adventure game? Or maybe even a fighting game? Who knows, but E3 could be the answer to everyone’s question.
Glass Rose (developed by Capcom)
--Capcom’s mysteriously announced game could possible show up at E3 to enlighten the millions of people who are wondering just what the heck it is. In what form or fashion, however, is yet to be determined, but expect a screen or two to pop up here and there.
Conflict: Desert Storm (developed by Take-Two)
--Conflict is a squad-based military action game, set against the 1991 Gulf War. Players will be able to take control of a Special Air Unit or Delta Force Unite ordered behind enemy lines. It was just recently announced, so expect a lot more information come E3.
The Italian Mob (developed by Take-Two)
--Keeping with the whole Mafia theme, Take-Two is set to release The Italian Mob for the GameCube, Playstation 2, X-Box and PC. The Italian Mob is set against the Michael Cain movie of the same name. Expect more about this game at E3 as well.
Mafia (developed by Take-Two)
--Not much is known about this title, but the publisher (responsible for publishing such titles as Grand Theft Auto 3 and State of Emergency) and the title gives a general idea of what it’s about. Look for some kind of showing at E3.
Robotech (developed by Vicious Circle)
--After 2 cancellations of Robotech: Crystal Dreams for the Nintendo 64, it looks like that Nintendo fans may just get a Robotech title after all. The one screen shot released thus far shows cel-shaded graphics. As for anything else regarding the title, no one is sure, though I’m sure E3 may just shed some light.
Lost Kingdoms (developed by From Software)
--Looking to make a final push towards its release date three days later, expect to see From Software show off Lost Kingdoms (Rune in Japan) at E3, including a playable demo and loads of screens and movies.
Bomberman Generations (developed by Majesco)
--A vibrant colorful adventure game, Bomberman Generations for the GameCube also utilizes cel-shaded graphics. Only a few screenshots have been released so far, so be sure to check out E3 for any new info.
Battle Houshin (developed by Koei)
--Koei’s first offering for the Nintendo Gamecube, Battle Houshin is based off of the Japanese manga Houshin Engi. There are rumors going around the Internet that Koei is planning to bring it to the U.S. If this is true, we should be able to see something at E3.
Turok: Evolution (developed by Acclaim)
--Coming out across all systems, expect some kind of Turok blowout at E3, but it could be on the Playstation2, X-Box, GameCube or all three. IGN has been doing a weekly feature on Turok: Evolution and the screens and movies have been taken from the X-Box version. If it shows up on the GameCube at E3, will give you all the details.
Die Hard: Vendetta (developed by Bits Studio)
--A GameCube exclusive and the system’s second FPS, Die Hard: Vendetta looks like a promising title. Set to be released sometime in Q3 2002, look for some kind of showing at E3.
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II (developed by Sega)
--Sonic Team’s Dreamcast upgrade of the highly successful MMORPG is set to launch in Japan this summer and be the leading title for Nintendo’s online plan . . . so far. There should be a lot of media surrounding this title at E3, maybe including a multiplayer playable version.
Skies Of Arcadia (developed by Sega)
--Recently confirmed as on track for a fiscal 2003 release date, there could likely be some kind of representation of the GameCube port at E3, though it will likely be minimal.
The Hobbit (developed by Inevitable Entertainment)
--So everyone’s seen the blockbuster The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring already. But what about the adventure that Bilbo set forth one Wednesday without a handkerchief and how he obtained the One Ring? Well, Inevitable Entertainment is set to release the game based on the classic J.R.R. Tolkein, so look for info at E3 2002.
With a lot of RPGs headed to the GameCube, one can’t help but wonder where exactly SquareSoft fits in following The Announcement just a little over than 2 months ago. Unfortunately, don’t expect to see any Final Fantasy or any other showing from Square at E3. And you can expect the some from Enix. Even though Enix has said they will support the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, nothing is to be shown.
More next week.
