News   Asteroids World Record Holder Dead
- Posted By Michael Loewer, 03.15.2002

Only six months after I was born, in November of 1982, a legend by the name of Scott Safran set the world Asteroids record in Newtown, Pennsylvania, scoring a whopping 41,336,440 points. He was only 15 years old at the time, making twenty-somethings like ourselves feel like we've wasted our lives.

For the past three years, our friends at Twin Galaxies, the internationally recognized videogame records keepers, have been searching for Safran in order to honor his achievement. He has recently been located, but sadly, the story ends on an unfortunate note.

Apparently, Safran lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, but died in 1989 after falling off of his roof in a botched attempt to save his pet cat. Walter Day of Twin Galaxies feels strongly that Safran's record will never be broken, and thus plans to award a posthumous medal to the legend's younger sister.

One can only hope that the cat survived, and turned out to be the best damned cat EVER, so that Safran's sacrifice may not be in vain.

He broke a world videogame record at the age of 15. What the hell are the rest of you people doing, anyway? Exercising? Making something of yourselves? For shame, I say, for shame.
