Guide Review Dragon Warrior I&II
- By Michael Loewer
The Enix re-release of Dragon Warrior I, II, and III on the Game Boy Color has been a delight for RPG lovers everywhere. We all received a further bonus when both Dragon Warrior I&II were released together on the same GBC cartridge: two classic games for the price of one!
Previously, we reviewed Prima Games' guide for Dragon Warrior III. Today, we present to you Prima's guide for Dragon Warrior I&II, both games covered in one guide.
Maps:
The maps in the DW I&II guide follow the same pattern as those in the previously reviewed guide for DW III. Every floor of every dungeon, castle, and village are mapped out with an easy labeling system. Stairs leading to each other are given the same value on the map, and treasures are labeled with letters corresponding to a neighboring item list.
Hints and Tips:
The tips given by this guide are top-notch. A list of objectives is given at the beginning of every area description, along with recommended experience levels for your character, expected monsters, and available treasures. In addition, the mission walkthru contains extra "notes" (special monster tactics, etc.) and even copies of important conversations!
Item/Weapon Descriptions:
The item descriptions in the DW I&II guide are just as thorough as those in DW III. All items (including weapon and armor) are listed with a picture and full stats alonside. This includes buy and sell price, character usage, and item locations.
General Writing Quality:
This is the one area where the guide for DW I&II surpasses that of DW III. The writing quality was never really in question in the guide for DW III, but the continuity was a problem. This guide corrects that error with an informal and very descriptive writing style. Instead of naturally assuming the gamer knows which direction to travel, the author of this guide very informally discusses where to go and even includes landscape notes along the way.
Regardless of whether you're an RPG veteran or someone playing Dragon Warrior for the first time, Prima's entire line of Dragon Warrior guides should provide some gaming comfort.
