Editorials   Nintendo's Online Gaming Idea
- By Lander Clinton

I was going to suggest this idea at Nintendo's press conference this year, but they were only taking pre-approved questions.

I think Nintendo could do online gaming for free for gamers if it had a corner of the screen designated for pop-up ads. That way, other companies would be paying for their server costs and the game players would only have to see small ads on the screen (or bigger during load times). We're already inundated with ads on web sites and now TV shows have ads for other shows running at the bottom all the time. At least you wouldn't have to stop playing to close the ad like a website- it would change to the next ad by itself.

I sent this idea to the standard nintendo@noa.nintendo.com and I of course got a standard reply. It basically thanked me for my business proposal, said it gets a lot of ideas from crack-pots like me, and wished me well in my business endeavors (by the way, the person who responded was the same person who told me to buy the strategy guide when my copy of Eternal Darkness was broken).

Miyamoto has said Nintendo has several online games in pre-production, they're just waiting for a sound business model to come about. There hasn't been a AAA online game that would make people want to pay a monthly fee just to play it, so why not eliminate the fees to consumers, still get paid, and release AA.5A games with ads popping up?

I hope someone at Nintendo is paying attention...
