Editorials   Quick Zelda Ideas
- By Lander Clinton

I thought of these ideas before playing Wind Waker, but didn't print them because I had avoided spoilers about the game and was kind of hoping they would be included. After playing most of the game, I'm sure they're not, so here goes:

1. Petrification Arrows. Another magic spell to add to arrows that could be used to turn enemies into climbable surfaces. That way Link could make his own blocks for puzzles.

2. Rope Arrows. It would basically be the same as the grappling hook, with Link shooting an arrow with a rope tied to the back that he could use as a zipline. Maybe he could use it to swing in the middle like Mario Sunshine's ropes.

3. More uses for the Grappling Hook. Okay, I'm not as into ropes as that girl from Joe Millionaire, but when I first saw the grappling hook in the fire dungeon at E3, I was sure Link could tie the claw end to a rock and then repel down the mountain side to other areas. I'm surprised the only thing Miyamoto thought to do with something as useful as a rope was swinging and climbing. No knots, no tripwires, etc.

4. Enemies having bows and arrows again. The 2D Zeldas had arrow-wielding enemies, why not the 3D ones? How cool would it be to zipline across a chasm while enemies are shooting flaming arrows at your rope? Okay, now I should really leave the rope ideas before I scare you all...

5. A new twist to the plot. I thought The Wind Waker, like Majora's Mask before it, had one of the most refreshing plots of a Zelda game, but it's still about the balance of power between Zelda (wisdom), Ganon (power), and Link (courage). I would like to see it revealed that there was a fourth goddess who helped make Hyrule- who left the upside-down missing triangle from the "Tri"force. What that triangle represents, or how it interacts with the other three, is up to Miyamoto, but I'm sure Ganon would seek it having lost the Triforce of Power so many times.

I would also like to see a Zelda game that takes place after the events of Zelda 2, which is chronologically the last Zelda chapter.

P.S. One of Link's costumes in Soul Calibur 2 should have been Shadow Link.
