Editorials   What About GBA's Successor?
- By Lander Clinton

As for Francis' response to my editorial, it's a matter of opinion about the name. NES 5 just doesn't feel right since the last few systems were never called NES 2-4. In fact, the closest thing to the NES 2 would be Nintendo's repackaged NES towards the end of its life-span, not the Super Nintendo.

The NES may not have been called "kiddy," but any boy over 12 and any girl who played it was considered a geek. Videogames are just now breaking out into mass appeal.

One more complaint, GameCube may not be doing as well percentage-wise as previous Nintendo consoles, but it's a much bigger market now, and it's important to note that it's already more of a success in Japan than Nintendo 64 ever was. Oh, and Nintendo 64 had a way bigger number than PS1, and that system still has games coming for it.

It's always good journalism to begin the story following up the headline, which is why, of course, I managed not to mention the GBA until now. If the GBC played old NES games, and the GBA plays old SNES games, I'm hoping Game Boy's next incarnation will play old N64 games, and hence should be called Game Boy 64. Just as Super Nintendo GameCube brings back the overly-used "Super," GB64 would bring back the even more used 64. Of course, when the GameCube's disc size was first shown, everyone assumed they would one day be playable in a Game Boy system, but I think we're a few years off from that.

I still think Nintendo should have named GameCube either Nintendo 65 or Super Nintendo 64, to show that the new system is to N64 as SNES was to NES. Miyamoto had been going on and on about evolution vs. revolution, and how Dolphin wouldn't be as big a difference from N64 as the N64 was from Super Nintendo. I doubt we'll see another leap like that until we have full-blown holodecks, so Super Nintendo GameCube would also illustrate that NES-SNES evolutionary change.

If we ever figure out how to get a poll on NGenres, maybe we'll have a vote on which name is better. It'll be one vote for NES 5, one vote for Super Nintendo GameCube, and about 10 votes for "I don't care," which will undoubtedly wind up being the name of the next Nintendo system...
