Editorials   What Not to Name Nintendo's Next Console
- By Francis Bonnet

Hello everyone. Just so you know, this follow-up editorial is in direct response to Lander's "Nintendo's Next Console" editorial, which can be viewed by clicking here. I enjoyed his editorial so much, I just HAD to respond to it, without insulting him too much of course.

Okay, well I totally agree with everything Lander discussed... that is, except for his naming of Nintendo's next console. "Super Nintendo Gamecube" just doesn't do it for me. In fact, the "Super Nintendo" name didn't do it for me way back in '91. I think all old-school Nintendo fans have had their fill of the word "super." Every game for that system just HAD to have the word "super" in the title. Super Metroid, Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Super Off Road, Super Punch Out, Super Castlevania IV and even peripherals like Super Gameboy. The list goes on and on. Please, no more "super."

Of course, Lander did make an interesting point in the fact that Nintendo needs to have a name that people of the next console generation will recognize like the Gameboy name or the Playstation name. So I humbly suggest that Nintendo returns to its roots. We should call Gamecube's successor (drumroll please) The Nintendo Entertainment System 5. Everyone knows that the NES shaped the gaming industry into what it is today. If Nintendo were to call their next system the NES 5, not only would it make them seem generations ahead of Playstation "3" and Xbox "2" but it would also attract a lot of older gamers who remember the fun they had playing their NES as a kid. Back then, playing your NES was considered cool and Nintendo didn't have a "kiddy" image. Nintendo's "kiddy" image actually didn't really start to develop until the release of the N64.

The Gamecube has been the least successful (so far) of Nintendo's home consoles (no Virtual Boy jokes, please). To keep the Gamecube name for the next generation of gaming just wouldn't make much sense, and if history has shown us anything, Nintendo will most likely NOT use the Gamecube name anywhere in the title of its next console. The two most popular Nintendo home consoles were the one's that had "Entertainment System" in their title. It's time for Nintendo to retake the gaming world and release the Nintendo Entertainment System 5. Or maybe the Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System (for those of you who thought that Ultra 64 was a much better name than Nintendo 64). Maybe Mega Nintendo Entertainment System? Nintendo Entertainment System SP? DX? All I know is that they've just got to bring back the "Entertainment System" name. Of course in Japan they'd have to use the "Famicom" name but don't get me started on that.
