Editorials   Metroid: The Motion Picture
- By Eric Tajchman

That’s right, there’s going to be a Metroid movie . . .

. . . Is this good or bad?

Considering that most video game-to-screen transposes are, how do you say, below a satisfactory quality, I find that this could either be an extremely good thing or a hideously bad idea, with no middle ground. If Metroid: The Cinematic Production comes out bad, which, given the ratio of good video game movies to the bad, leaves a 76.832% chance of occurring, it would disappoint many Metroid fans. Also, Metroid isn’t some rinky-dink franchise here, like Tomb Raider or Spy Hunter. It’s in a league all its own, and if the movie is a dud, it’s going to tarnish one of the last few epic gaming franchises not marred with some sort of failed, blatant attempt at multi-industry commercialism.

But, if somehow, someway, they turn out a great movie, it would be a great marketing decision for Nintendo (which come fewer and fewer, it seems), second only to Fred Savage’s critically-acclaimed, The Wizard, of course. I’m assuming this movie won’t get underway anytime soon, and if Nintendo timed it right, the movie’s release could coincide with the release of another Metroid title, boosting both products exceedingly. Also, Metroid is one of the first video games to have a plot worthy of film. If the same essence of the games can be captured in film, it could be the first truly great video game-based movie. As well, it would be great if they went the CG way like Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within, as most of the adventure takes place with Samus by herself battling alien creatures (and I don’t want to see a guy in a Mother Brain zip-up costume).

So, as of right now, I’m very skeptical on the whole idea of a Metroid movie. It could be stupendous, and then it again it could be the exact opposite. As usual, we will inform you when new information arises.
