Editorials   Eternal Darkness Impressions!
- By Joe Ridino

Today I had the chance to play Eternal Darkness, a Silicon Knights project. What I saw amazed me, and everyone around me was awed.

There were three playable characters to choose from. I choose a knight, while I could have chosen a girl and some sort of warrior. The knight was detailed all the way up to impressive facial animations. He wields a strong sword, which is capable of cutting off specific body parts. For instance, I encountered a full size, stone body that I could practice my skills on. By using the targeting system, I locked on to individual body parts, one at a time. So, if you wanted to, you could target someone’s right arm, and then chop it off by targeting and slicing at it.

The visuals were very, very impressive. When I was controlling the knight, I had the ability to run toward the camera and see the pretty details of my knight. The overall textures and surfaces were very crispy, something Dyack was saying also. Oh yeah, forgot to mention something. Denis Dyack, the producer of the game, was standing right next to me while I played! He was going over all the awesome details of what we can expect to see and how great the game already is.

As I explored this creepy castle, I encountered various enemies. I swung my sword after I targeted it, and after 3 or 4 hits, it was gone. What was really cool was that before enemies die, you have the option to ‘Finish Him.’ By repeatedly striking him still, the enemy will die an even more gruesome death. I overheard Dyack talking about having multiple enemies on screen with no hesitation. The game does run at a constant and smooth 60 FPS all the way through.

Remember those transitions between screens in the original version of ED? With the power of GameCube, everything is super smooth, which eliminates those pesky transitions.

If you want more on Eternal Darkness, you should definitely be here tonight for our Denis Dyack exclusive interview!
