E3 Impressions on Kameo: Elements of Power
- By Andrew

There are only three GameCube systems on the show floor devoted to Rare's interesting new adventure game, Kameo: Elements of Power. The wait for playtime is long, and it is difficult to concentrate with a crowd of anxious gaming nuts bumping into you. However difficult it is to play, Kameo gets my pick for “greatest potential,” it’s obvious that the game is still fairly early in development (it froze twice during my 30 minutes of playtime) but it’s premise is very intriguing. As mentioned in our preview, Kameo is a fairy goddess who is able to morph into several different kinds of monsters, which she has captured and raised to maturity. The version of Kameo playable today offered three different levels to explore. In the first level, Kameo needed to capture various types of creatures using her impressive looking magical spells. In order to capture one of these creatures, gamers need to target-lock the critter, tap ‘A’, and then center their target before tapping ‘A’ again. Later levels brought these then-mature creatures back into the picture by enabling players to “summon” them and take control of their bodies. Players are actually able to take control of the animal, inheriting all of its unique abilities in order to complete certain tasks. For example, one of the captured animals is a flying reptile that allows Kameo to fly around her environment.
The ‘Z’ shoulder button activated one of the other interesting features. Once pressed, a HUGE monster appears out of thin air and attacks any enemies in sight. I’m not sure how this attack is going to be implemented into gameplay, but in the demo version it wasn’t limited at all. If ever I found myself surrounded by enemies I needed only to hit the ‘Z’ button in order to completely demolish them.
