Thoughts on Mario Sunshine
- By Aaron

The end of August is close, bringing to end a summer vacation, freedom, and lack of responsibility that we oh-so care for dearly. But with the toil of school comes a ray of hope, Super Mario Sunshine. It's been a lonnng wait my friends, 6 years almost. While there have been many a filler before our virtual main course, our eyes were always fixed on gorging the beautiful dinner that is a new Mario game. All of us as GameCube owners owe it to ourselves to go and purchase this game. It's already kicking major Sony ass in Japan, and there's the fact that Mario just freakin' rules. But as I scour the Internet board posts, I see a hint of hesitation or disgust in every few Nintendo fans towards this new iteration of our beloved plumber hero. Is there reason to worry? Possibly. But should you really?
Hell no.
I do not understand why so many Nintendoites, or so they say they are, are automatically biased against Mario Sunshine. Sure, I guess the people who love it already shouldn't be so appraising until they try it, but then again Nintendo's track record hasn't let us down. The underlying fact is that Sunshine WILL be a best selling title. Should I say it is perfect until I try it? No, that would be unfair. But it is also unfair to accuse Sunshine of being a bad game before you try it. People are always critics, bashing something because it's not how they envisioned it. Big deal, life (and games) aren't always they way you want. So what if Mario uses a water pack? You can do TONS more stuff with it, then just plain ol' triple jumping to the next star or whatever you need. With the different nozzle attachments available, they add more depth to the game. Maybe a puzzle can't be done before, but once you find the new nozzle, you might remember, and come back, complete the puzzle and open up a new area with more to do. There are little things also that will make it an enjoyable experience. Quality voice work, returning characters, Yoshi for one, and much more. Maybe the camera can be pretty bad in some places, from what I hear from importers. But that doesn't seem to heed the praise this game is getting all around the world.
So obviously Mario Sunshine is so good that people can ignore the camera, and the "not pushing the graphics to the limit" deal. In all, it relies on the gameplay, and with Mario, you know you're getting THE best platform and adventure experience this side of, well any other Mario game. Sony can't offer this, neither can Xbox. So they can have their "cool and mature" games. People can whine about Mario Sunshine's content. But the reality is that when release time comes, none of it will matter. And I can bet that some of those naysayers will eventually play it, and see that they were wrong. Of that, I can assure you.
