An Eternal Debate
- By Aaron

We here at NAdventures are team players. Our jobs consume our life and we love to do them. It’s not so hard to wake up every morning and think of that story you’re supposed to do today, or the game you need to review, etc. The whole NGenres site shares this common goal and visage, though because of our different tastes we are divided into 4 separate and completely different groups...well, for the most part. It has come to my attention that there is a civil war per say amongst our ranks. This outrageous debacle, over a game that one genre claims is theirs unjustly, and the other, a genre who truly deserves it. The game is none other than Eternal Darkness. The factions are NAdventures and NShooters. Now, the sides have been drawn, friend against friend, genre against genre. Can we survive an inside struggle? Well, I know NAdventures can.
Now, NShooters claims the game to be a "shooter" because there are, what is it, oh yeah "guns." Mega Man had guns, didn’t he? Isn’t Mega Man a platformer though? Interesting... Ok, I guess we can claim Zelda as a shooter because the octoroks project rocks at you, right? Mario threw fireballs, is he a shooter now? All sarcasm aside, the fact remains, Eternal Darkness is NOT and I repeat NOT a Resident Evil, which coincidentally was also claimed by NShooters (side note: they can have Resident Evil). While the games seem pretty similar and look eerily equal, the differences outweigh all the similarities. In Resident Evil, could you use magick powers? Or how about make tons and tons of different combinations with your various spells and end up creating a bad ass magick? Hardly, well, I guess you COULD combine bullets. Again, in Resident Evil, were you able to target 4 different parts of your enemy’s body? All I remember is that you got lucky with a headshot, but in ED you can make every hit a head shot. I could throw in there that you don’t even get a gun till later in the game, but at this point is it really necessary?
Since the early days of NES and SNES, games have always been put into separate groups, divided due to their different styles and gameplay. Even if at first some players didn’t call FF2 an RPG, or Mega Man a platformer, they knew the differences and chose a game according to their tastes. So for years, gaming has been mixed into many kinds of game types. Action, adventure, platformer, RPG, sports, puzzle and as of late, miscellaneous and music genres. I guess that some of those genres could be confused, or blended such as an action/adventure. Sometimes a game exempts qualities from multiple genres, and then what are you supposed to call it? BUT, how could you confuse an adventure game, with a shooter? Just because it may have guns, or modern themes, does not mean it’s just a shoot-em-up. Indeed, this is hardly the case. Do you, fellow NGenres readers, think that this game should be a shooter? To those of you that have played it, does it exact any tendencies, other than shooting, that could classify it as shooter? It is hard to tell otherwise, people all have different opinions. All I know is that I am fighting for truth and rightfulness.
Fellow gaming community, you must hearken to the call of justice. The NShooters team is trying to gobble up another game because they saw Zombies and guns in the game description. We can not stand for this, I for one will not. If you play ED, you shall see it is not a mindless objective "shoot, run, reload, shoot, shoot, shoot." And so on. When you play this marvel of a game, you shall thank Silicon Knights for their hard work and greatness. You shall also not anger them by calling their masterpiece a..a..sorry it’s hard for me to say..."shooter." I shiver at the thought of that atrocity. Tyranny and blasphemy are not tolerated easily in life, so why should a video game deprived genre (cough, Adventures, cough) stand back and watch these tyrants take over this crucial game?
As Bob Marley once sang "Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight." Wise words Mr. Marley, words that I intend to follow, and practice with utmost swiftness and effectiveness. Vive la NAdventures!
