Editorials   The Modern Mentality of Nintendo Gaming
- By Aaron Thayer

My memories of childhood are vast, and happy. They were days of outdoors activity, jumping and running, laughing and smiling. Those memories also include the influential wonders of The Nintendo. I call them the Nintendo because something as amazing as the power of Nintendo deserves to be called no less than The. Although developing pasty skin after receiving my Super NES, I did not care. My mind was too involved in infinite games of A Link to the Past and Super Mario World. As I grew older, so did my tastes. Eventually those titles were joined by games such as Star Fox, Metroid, Mega Man and his many incarnates. Then came Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, and the mother of all RPGs... Earthbound. Countless hours were put into that game, good lord, for a while there I thought of dropping the 5th grade and becoming the youngest ever full time game developer. But after finishing the game numerous times, I put it and my SNES away to pursue my new love, the Nintendo 64 (previously known as Ultra 64, which thank god wasn't the final name). In fact, I was the first person in line on launch day at the local Toys R Us.

For 5+ years, I was enthralled in my N64. Never once did I believe those dumb ass statements that called the 64 a kiddie machine. I was a Nintendo fan boy, and still am. But, eventually I branched out into other areas of gaming. Yes, I did buy a Dreamcast, on launch day, then a Playstation, and later on a PS2 (which besides one or two games, isn;t really that amazing, the friggin DVD sucks ass on it). Currently my entertainment cabinet is filled with GameCube and 64 games. I have a GBA also, and love it to death. But these times are strange ones. Lately, my systems have been gathering dust, and my gaming finger blisters are healing. I'm getting a tan, losing weight, hell I even have better eyesight now. All jokes aside, I seriously do not know where my gaming persona is heading. I think, am I starting to lose interest? AH! Why do I say such evil things?? Am I growing out of games, or is it because the industry has failed to produce a spark underneath me? Has the fire died within me?

Alas, the passion is no more. I can only play so many games if SSBM, and traverse the many halls of Luigi's Mansion once or twice more before I gouge out my eyes. I crave more, and the one thing that can do that is still far away. The killer apps for the Cube are still months off (except Eternal Darkness, which will be great). I did not forget to mention Resident Evil because graphics and re-designed mansions only go so far for me. I know how it ends; I know the characters already. Give me Resident Evil 0, or 4. Give me more, something new. I want to play a new Mario game, a new Metroid, and for god's sake a new Zelda! My friends and gaming peers feel the same. They are diehard Nintendoists, even more so then they'd like to admit, and unfortunately their Cubes are now in the cupboard, collecting dust. Do you, Nintendo fans, not crave more than what is handed to us right now? Do not hide your want for new and exciting adventures, and do not put down the possibilities of Zelda. I thought the fan boys of all people would believe in the Nintendo difference, instead of resorting to anger and childish nicknames such as Celda.

But you all know as well as I, that Nintendo is not putting the effort forth that they should. So what if PS2 has 8 million units? Sony is only making money because they are considered cool in our society. Honestly, just because they allow these mature games, means they are the must have game makers? I object to the Sony image, they got lucky. All Nintendo needs to do is to pull out the big guns, and soon, which they will do, and I can assure every one of you that the magic that has been missing from our lives will be reintroduced again. We will once again feel like we did when we first turned on our NESes, SNESes, and N64s. Nintendo, I believe in your power, and your difference. Although I may not be showing my true colors currently, I will always be true to you and thank you for the years of happiness you have given my gaming colleagues and me. Obviously I do this, because every time there is an official product released I have to run out and buy it even if I don't need it, or already have it in a different color. I just today bought the Wavebird, and it made me go back and play all those games I haven't touched for months. The main reason I bought Star Fox 64 was for the rumble pack, and Pokemon Stadium for the N64/GB connector.

Right now, I'm thinking about the future. In a few years I'll be going to college, then graduating and getting a job. In between those very significant events, I have a lot of time to fill. Will I be playing whatever new Nintendo system is developed? Or will I be just partying and getting drunk every weekend? I honestly don't know. Games are a big part of my present life, I AM writing for a website that is all about games. For some reason I just don't feel as inspired to play anything any more, even GBA. What will I do? Can I wait long enough for the new series installments of my favorite games? Only time will tell how I decide to pursue gaming. But Nintendo, please don't release any more semi let down Luigi's Mansions. I trust your wise-ness Nintendo Masters, but you have to admit Luigi's Mansion isn't selling Cubes right now, or for that matter is IN any Cubes right now.
