Editorials   New Cube Owners, Vol. 14
- By Lander Clinton

I thought I'd do something a little different tonight. I'll assume that you've all run out and bought every game I recommended and are now swamped with great games to play, but I don't want you to lose perspective. A wise man once said: where great GameCube games lead other great GameCube games will follow.

Tonight I'm going to preview upcoming GameCube games you must own. If these Friday change-of-events become regular they'll be like the Friday Batgirl episodes of 60s Batman, and the Friday Zelda episodes of the Super Mario Super Show.

Here goes:

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles- I was skeptical until I played it at E3 with strangers and had a great time. Get some friends together and this could be the most FUN Final Fantasy game ever made.

Pikmin 2- Delayed until May to fill some gaps in the release schedule, Pikmin 2 adds at least two new types of Pikmin and a second space alien to command them. It will be a lot like the original, which is a good thing.

Killer 7- This cel-shaded film noir Capcom game is still shrouded in mystery. We know it stars a wheelchair-bound guy with multiple assassin personalities, and we know that it looks really bad ass. No one's confirmed how it plays, but I dare you to take your eyes OFF this one.

Resident Evil 4- Another member of "The Capcom 5," RE4 departs from the series and uses fully 3D environments instead of pre-rendered backgrounds. Guess what? It looks just as good, if not better, than it's GameCube predecessors.

Metroid Prime 2- Retro Studios is hard at work at the sequel to one of the most satisfying GameCube games around. Very little has been shown, so watch for E3.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- If it's closer to Chamber of Secrets than it is to Sorcerer's Stone (the games), EA's next in the franchise will make you skip school to play school.

James Bond: Everything or Nothing- Someone's finally making a 3rd person Bond game. The graphics already look very cinematic. Hopefully the game will come together around the graphics.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes- I knew when Denis Dyack said it would come out "this winter," he meant next March, which is technically this winter. Anyway, so far I'm not impressed with the graphics, and the few minutes I played at E3 got Snake stuck where he couldn't get out, but you cannot deny the skill of the team that made Eternal Darkness.

Star Fox 2 (Armada)- Woah, this one needed major work after the E3 preview, but thankfully it was admittedly an early build. The multiplayer games available were like a mech game (see: Xbox). Let's hope the single player game is challenging like the original with the action of the N64 sequel.

Spider-Man 2- Hey, since when was a movie tie-in game bad?

Baten Kaitos- GameCube's first big traditional RPG would be highly appreciated on the PS2, the system of choice for RPG lovers. Everything about this game looks amazing.

Geist- Possess people and animals in this exclusive first person shooter. Losing health? Jump out of your body and inhabit someone else- just make sure you don't shoot them up before you use them.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life- The creator of the series says this is his best work, and he couldn't do a better farming/life sim, only increase the graphics on future systems.

Paper Mario- Who knows if this will be out in 2004, but it's on my list no matter what. All the Mario RPGs have delivered big.

Super Monkey Ball 3- More 3D puzzles, more mini-games, more monkey balls. What's not to like?

That's it for now. There are many other games that have been announced and could wind up being great. Go get them (in the future)!
