Editorials   New Cube Owners, Vol. 5
- By Lander Clinton

Since Nintendo recently sold in one weekend roughly the same number of GameCubes it sold at launch, I thought I'd do a little something for all the new Cube owners out there.

Everyday until I run out of ideas, forget, or am too busy playing a game, I'll update a GameCube game you must own and why you must own it.

Here goes:

Been playing videogames long? If so, you probably remember the great 2D platformers of yesteryear, if not, you should play the great 2D platformers of yesteryear. Either way, the good people at Capcom took it upon themselves to create a game that both played like and built upon the classics. Of course I'm talking about Viewtiful Joe. I just used the word "upon" twice in one sentence, now thrice in one paragraph- that has to be a record. And who ever says "thrice?" What the hell's wrong with me?

Ahem, using modern cel-shaded graphics, Viewtiful Joe plays in a stylized 2D/3D movie world that looks like a comic book. Since you can only move in one plain the controls are perfectly responsive, allowing your skills to really develop. And you will notice how much you've improved, too, but only if you go back to the beginning, since the game's difficulty level keeps a steady pace with you. This is not a game for impatient people. Sure, impatient people love explosions and people kicking ass, but they should only watch someone else play VJoe because the game can get pretty damn hard. By the way, if you find yourself being impatient too often, there are numerous ADHD drugs available on the market. Don't try to work out your problems, just swallow some pills!

As you progress in the game you'll learn and purchase new moves and items for Joe, like slowing down time, Voomerangs, and plenty of slick moves that let Joe kick ass while looking good at the same time, which is his character.

The music in the game doesn't really stand out, but I would like to mention the car horn solo on the street level. It was a nice touch.

VJoe is still a new game, but that doesn't mean you have to spend $50 on it. Capcom was nice enough to slash $10 off the price and initially release it for $40. This is the kind of game we need to encourage more of, so feel free to go get it!
