Editorials   New Cube Owners Vol. 1
- By Lander Clinton

Since Nintendo just sold in one weekend roughly the same number of GameCubes it sold at launch, I thought I'd do a little something for all the new Cube owners out there.

Everyday until I run out of ideas, forget, or am too busy playing a game, I'll update a GameCube game you must own and why you must own it.

Here goes:

Okay, I know it didn't launch with the system, but what do you care, neither did you! Super Mario Sunshine is the first game you should own, and not just for tradition's sake. It may be derivitive of other platformers, but this game is flat-out fun for the whole damn time. Years after Super Mario 64 introduced us to 3D gaming, no other franchise gives the player a fun time just running around the environment, jumping like a loon.

The game has Mario on a quest for 120 "shines" (not all are necessary to win) and actually tries to include a story, something usually absent from Mario games. One of the best highlights of Mario Sunshine are periodic 3D puzzle zones that don't take place in the regular levels. These are some of the most challenging feats you'll have to do in a videogame, but it's so much fun to play that it never gets frustrating- each loss encourages you to try to do better the next time. Frankly I'd love a new Mario game that just had 90 or so levels of this and there was nothing to collect- just make it to the end of the level and try the next one.

As a Player's Choice title, Super Mario Sunshine is cheaper than.... a french maid.... um, since sliced bread... in a glass house... who is more expensive than the current price of Mario. Go get it!
