The following is why I'm excited about F-Zero GX.
There are only two games I've played where I went so fast that the floor pattern overlapped itself in each frame and it looked like I was going backwards: F-Zero X and Super Monkey Ball 2.
Anyone following F-Zero GX knows that it's the first polygonal sequel to the N64's F-Zero X, and that it was developed by Sega's Amusement Vision, the same team that made the Super Monkey Ball games. What all this means is that GX is going to be damn fast!!!!
To achieve the illusion of going backwards in F-Zero X, play the second course available in the Jack Cup. This one just loops around and has no turns to slow you down. Pick the car that looks like a red rocket, and put the acceleration/speed bar all the way up on speed. You also need to memorize the track to hit as many boosts as possible. When you get boost power on the second lap, just keep hitting it, and by the end of the third lap, usually around the time you reach the tunnel, the textures of the course will be slightly overlapping each other and it will look like you're going backwards slowly.
To get the effect in Super Monkey Ball 2 is much simpler. Play the Advanced mode course 7 or 8 that looks like a giant triangle. Just hold the control stick forward the whole time and you'll eventually see it. It's a little weird the first time so don't let it throw you from keeping the stick forward.
There's one other game that should have an honorable mention in terms of speed: Extreme G.
I've never played XG2 or 3, and only played a demo of XGRA at E3 (and was not impressed), but the first is still one of my favorite racers. Although you won't see the backwards-track illusion, you can get an upside-down track from going fast enough. If you enter your name as "NITROID" in the tournament mode and then play a regular race, your bike will have unlimited super nitros. These nitros make you faster than the ones you get without cheating, and put the camera into a "fisheye" mode, which makes it look like you're going to warp. If you use a lot of them in succession, you can go fast enough that for some reason the entire screen flips upside-down until you slow down again. Even if you could see what you were doing when the track was upside-down and fisheyed, you're still going too fast to have any control, but it doesn't matter. If you hit every wall you'll still be far ahead of everyone else.
Don't use the super nitros on the lava level, you'll fly off the track every two seconds.
F-Zero GX comes out next week and XGRA later this year- which will push the limits of speed?
